Meet Sarah Arlin - Melbourne Melts

Hi Sarah, please tell us about your stall.

Melbourne Melts is a wax melts online store selling highly scented wax melts. Wax Melts are an amazing alternative to scented candles, in addition to this, they are safer to use and are fast melting. Wax Melts have a longer burn time than candles. Wax melts absorb heat slower than traditional candles and therefore are able to release aromas without burning the oils. This gives the wax the ability to continue releasing the fragrance without the scent evaporating quickly.

How did you begin your business, and why?

I recently started Melbourne Melts because I have always liked everything about candles and making the home smell amazing. I discovered wax melts through a special friend of mine from England, I just had to give it a try. I started experimenting in our kitchen last year, but then lock down happened, along with home schooling, which took up most of my time, so everything was put on hold. Finally this year and thanks to the support of my family, Melbourne Melts was born. I now have my own little wax workshop that I work from and I am very proud to say each product is uniquely handmade.

Where and how did you learn to create such pieces and what drives you?

I learnt how to create wax melts from my friend in England and then with practice I have been able to create a wide range of scents and selections. I love making the wax melts and coming up with new ideas. The melts are hand-poured in small batches and every detail is hand-made with Love and Passion.

Can you elaborate on your creative process? How do you make your items, and what sets you apart from other stalls?

Our soy wax melts are a great way to enjoy our beautiful selection of fragrances. We aim to provide high quality products at affordable prices. The wax melts are easy to use and have a long burn time. Just place the wax melt in your favourite oil burner dish and wait for the scent to fill your home. Experience a slow, sensational scent throw filling your space with your desired fragrance.

What do you love most about being a stallholder at CMA?

Unfortunately I have not had chance to become a stallholder as yet only a virtual stall holder. Once the lock downs have ended I will be looking to change that.

What was your experience becoming a small business owner in Australia?

Once I had made up my mind to go for it and start my business it was pretty much straight forward. I found the process very easy and there was lots of help and advise online to help. The only thing I found challenging was to set up my own website. This was time consuming but once done it was a big accomplishment for a none tech savvy person like me.

What are the challenges and rewards of being your own boss?

My business is still really new and so I am still trying to build a customer base and increase awareness of my website and grow my Instagram following. I think the biggest challenge has been opening while a pandemic is going on, with home schooling and trying to juggle everything at the same time.

Describe your perfect weekend!

My perfect weekend would be spending it with my family. I have a husband and an 8 year old son who loves soccer. On a normal Sunday we get up early and go watch him play his match. I love this and he makes me so proud every time I watch.

What do you see for the future for you, and your business?

I hope that in the future the business grows. I would love to expand and then eventually open a shop in my home suburb.

What do you love about Melbourne and Victoria?

I moved to Melbourne from the UK 5 years ago with my husband and my then 3 year old son. I did not know anyone here and to be honest I had never really known too much about Melbourne apart from what I had seen on Neighbours. In my head when I moved I was only going to be here for 6 months but that soon turned into 5 years and we love it. We love where we live and could not be happier, Melbourne is so friendly the city is fantastic and there is so much to do and see. I truly feel at home here and we are also in the process of gaining our citizenship.

What other stalls are you looking forward to checking out at our next CMA market day?

The Food stalls with all the lovely local produce. Especially PowerHouse Cheese Stall and the Gourmet Morsels Spices which look fabulous.

What advice would you give to someone interested in setting up their own small business or stall?

I would say do your research this is most important. Get some advice on the business side of things and if you are not great with technology like me then maybe get someone to help with your website.

How did you adapt and overcome the challenges of the past year?

It has been a difficult year for everyone but I felt that setting up my own business was a welcome distraction. It helped me focus and not let the situation of lock downs and missing my family get to me.
